The This Morning presenter, 62, said how she “felt like my uterus had been cut out” and was “physically in pain” when the 20-year-old – who she shares with husband Eamonn Holmes – left the nest.
Ruth also admitted that in the days after he left she would sit on his bed “sniffing his pillow” because she missed him so much.
Cruel: Ruth Langsford has spoken candidly about the extreme sadness she felt when her son Jack left for university
She told Woman & Home: “I really understand the pain of the empty nest syndrome. The day we dropped Jack off at university we said our goodbyes and as we rounded the corner I burst into tears and Eamonn was crying too.
“It sounds dramatic, but for the next three days, it felt like my uterus had been ripped out. It was physical pain. I would sit on his bed, smell his pillow and keep his bedroom door closed because then I could imagine he was in there.
“Now they’re great. Jack seems so happy and I don’t get so upset every time he comes home and then leaves again.’
Family: The This Morning presenter, 62, said how she ‘felt like my womb had been cut out’ and was ‘physically in pain’ when the 20-year-old (left) – who she shares with husband Eamonn Holmes – left the nest (his daughter Rebecca pictured right)
Upset: Ruth also admitted that in the days after the left she would sit on his bed ‘sniffing his pillow’ because she missed him so much
She also opened up about her marriage to Eamonn in the candid interview saying that you don’t fall out over ‘big things’ but instead have little domestic disputes.
He said: “Eamon and I don’t fight over big things. On our anniversary, he peeled off the foil cover on a plastic milk bottle, left it wet on the workbench, poured his tea and left.
“Such things can make me angry. I said, “How can your brain tell you it’s wrong?” Eamonn’s mum had five boys and did everything for them, whereas I went to boarding school so I was much more hands-on, so we’re very different.
Candid: She told Woman & Home: “I really understand the pain of the empty nest syndrome. The day we dropped Jack off at university we said goodbye and as we came around the corner I burst into tears and Eamonn was crying too.’
“If Jack ever left something on the side, I’d say, ‘Who do you think is taking this?’ My? The girls didn’t put them on the ground for the men to pick them up!”. I hope the young women of his generation will not accept this. It should not be the case that women work and then come home and do the housework.’
It comes after earlier this week Ruth returned home to present This Morning – with Rylan Clark replacing husband Eamonn as co-host.
The Loose Women star hosted the ITV morning show for the first time since October 2021 on Monday alongside former X-Factor contestant Rylan, 33.
Tough: She continued: “It sounds dramatic, but for the next three days, I felt like my uterus had been ripped out. It was physical pain’ (pictured with Jack as a baby in 2002)
It was the first time he has hosted This Morning since Eamonn left ITV to present the rebel channel’s morning show GB News with Isobel Webster last November.
Ruth confirmed the news on Instagram on Sunday along with a compilation of her best moments on the daytime staple with Rylan.
She captioned the hilarious video: “Thrilled to be reunited with my TV son [Rylan] on [This Morning] tomorrow….let the fun begin! I hope you will join us at 10.00 am [ITV]’.

Eamonn and Ruth used to co-host This Morning as stand-ins for headliners Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on Fridays.
While Eamonn jumped ship, Ruth remained at ITV as a regular presenter on another ITV daytime staple, Loose Women.
But after Eamonn’s defection, they were replaced by new fan favorite Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary.
Eamonn, 62, made enemies at ITV when he claimed former colleague Phillip Schofield “has a habit of ‘snobbing people’” during an interview with the Daily Mail’s Weekend magazine.
Belfast-based Eamonn, who now presents the GB News breakfast show with co-presenter Isabel Webster, accused ITV bosses of making it look like he had left when in fact he had “no idea” why he was being axed.
“Nobody explained anything to me,” he told Weekend magazine.
“I’m all for the TV companies being able to choose who works for them, but it would be nice if they told you why you were going.
“They are cunning. They didn’t want to announce that I had been dropped because that would hurt the audience numbers, so they made it look like I had walked away from them, not the other way around.”
