Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester told a news conference that police were patrolling the area around 2 a.m. when they heard gunshots. When they reached the spot, they found a crowd gathered on the street and six dead. Another 10 either picked themselves up or were taken to hospitals. No information was provided on their condition.
Authorities do not know if one or more suspects are involved.
Kelsey Schar, 18, was living on the fourth floor of the Citizen Hotel when she heard gunshots. He went to the window and “saw a guy running and just shooting,” Schar told the Associated Press.
He saw flashes from the gun in the dark.
Madalyn Woodard, 17, who also stayed at the same hotel, said she saw a crowd running down the street. He saw a girl who appeared to have been shot in the hand and lying on the ground. The nightclub guards rushed to her aid.
“These nightclub guards, I think they were right next to her, they brought them, like napkins. I could see the damn napkins they were using,” Woodard said.
The police ask for the help of the public to locate those responsible. Leicester did not provide details on the type of weapon used.
This is “a very complicated and complicated scene,” he said. Leicester appealed to the public, asking witnesses or anyone with recordings of the incident to contact police.
Shortly after the shooting, a video was posted on Twitter showing people running down the street amid the sound of rapid gunfire. The video shows several ambulances on the spot.
The shooting – just two blocks from the state Capitol – was condemned by top political officials.
Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement that his government is working closely with law enforcement.
“What we know at this point is that there has been another massive attack with casualties, leaving families with missing loved ones, many injured and a community in grief. The scourge of armed violence continues to be a crisis in our country and we must resolutely to put an end to this massacre, “he said.
Meanwhile, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said via Twitter: “Words can not express my grief this morning. The number of dead and injured is difficult to understand.”
“Increasing gun violence is the scourge of the city, our state and our nation, and I support all efforts to reduce it,” he said.
Residents were urged to avoid the area, which is full of restaurants and bars, including London’s nightclub.
Kay Harris, 32, said she was asleep when one of her family members called to say they thought her brother had been killed. He said he thought he was in London.
Harris said he has been to the club a few times and described it as a place for “the younger crowd”. The bars and clubs close at 2 in the morning and it is normal for the streets to be crowded at that time.
He has spent the morning circling the square waiting for news.
“Very much an absurd act of violence,” he said.
Steve Hicks was staying at the Citizen Hotel with his fiancée and two daughters after a Tyler the Creator concert at the Golden One Center. He said he did not hear any shots but the sirens woke him up.
The police have closed the streets around the club, with the yellow police film waving with the breeze early in the morning.
Barry Atsius, a community activist, said he came to the scene shortly after the shooting.
The first thing I saw were victims. I saw a young girl with a whole bunch of blood on her body, a girl pulling out her glass, a young girl screaming, “They killed my sister.” A mother runs, “Where is my son, has my son been shot? ” he said.
UC Davis Medical Center received five patients from the downtown shooting, spokeswoman Stephanie Winn said. He did not give their gender or terms, referring the media to the police.
Sunday’s violence was the latest in Sacramento. Last month, a father killed his three daughters, a attendant and himself in a church during a weekly surveillance. David Mora, 39, was armed with a makeshift semi-automatic weapon, although he was under a restrictive measure that barred him from possessing a firearm. His daughters were 13, 10 and 9 years old.

Sunday’s violence was the third time in the United States this year that at least six people have been killed in mass shootings, according to a database compiled by the Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University. And it was the second mass shooting in Sacramento in five weeks.

“Our city has a broken heart this morning,” Steinberg said. “This is an absurd and unacceptable tragedy.”

Ten ambulances and fifty first responders from the Sacramento Fire Department responded to the shooting, according to Capt. Keith Wade.
Correction:
This version corrects that the previous mass shooting in Sacramento took place on February 28 and not last month. This version also corrects that four patients from the shooting, not five, were taken to UC Davis Medical Center.
