On February 28, 2021, police were called in to shoot at Arvin Avenua and Hilton Drive around 7 p.m. following a report of shootings.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the body of 39-year-old Tyler Pratt, a resident of British Columbia, who had been found dead at the scene.
A 26-year-old woman was also found shot in the side of the road. He was rushed to hospital and has since been released after “extensive treatment”, according to police.
The two victims were known to each other, the police have previously stated, although their exact relationship has not been revealed.
Investigators have identified two suspects in the deadly shooting. By that time, however, they had both left the country.
Police say the suspects, who identified themselves as 28-year-old Oliver Carafa and 25-year-old Yun (Lucy) Lu Li, settled in Eastern Europe within 24 hours of the incident.
Both were arrested in June by local law enforcement in Budapest, but only Lee was extradited the following month.
Eight months later, Carafa was taken back to Canada, Hamilton police confirmed in a press release on Wednesday.
“The Hamilton Police Department recognizes all the efforts of our police partners at home and international level, namely the Hungarian Fugitive Search Team (FAST), for the collective efforts that resulted in the arrest of these wanted persons,” officials said.
He is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
