At around 6:30 a.m., police spotted a man with a gun in his hands at 103A Avenue and 96th Street, police said in a press release. The police officers noticed the man as help was requested and regular police officers and canines rushed to the spot. The man fled from the police to the LRT rails along 95th Street and 105th Avenue, where police said a “confrontation took place” and police fired at the man. He was taken to hospital where he later died. Clem Moosomin and his wife were sleeping in a tent near the spot and woke up to multiple gunfire around 6:30 p.m. “All I heard was the first shot, it was like a bang; it sounded like a shotgun. “And suddenly I heard a whole bunch, like nine shots right after that really fast,” Moosomin said.

He said an LRT train was passing by when the shooting started and covered his wife until they stopped. “When I went to look outside the stage, you could see someone coming down. He was badly injured. “Suddenly a policeman came up behind me and told me to go on stage.” Mussomin said something fell from the man’s hand when it hit the ground. “But I could not see why it was so fast,” he said. Police said no police officers were injured and the Alberta Serious Accident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating. The search caused delays in LRT traffic and travel, and Edmonton Transit Services had a spare bus running between Churchill and Stadium. This is the third police shooting so far this year, and the fourth to be killed.

On February 23, police opened fire on 36-year-old Mitchell Tyler Potts, who was accused of using a gun to rob an Oliver liquor store. Potts died near 107th Avenue and 105th Street, where ASIRT investigators say they found an “imitation” firearm. Another man was hit in his apartment by a stray bullet. The 59-year-old, who was the manager of the apartment building, died at the hospital a short time later. Then, on March 13, a man was killed during a confrontation with the regular Edmonton Police Department. According to the police, the 39-year-old man who was wanted with more than 20 pending provincial warrants and a warrant for a nationwide Canada was being monitored by police. He was seen getting into a vehicle with two women and then driving south to a building at 105th Street and 38th Avenue. When the women left the vehicle, the tactical team attempted to arrest the man. Police said there was a collision and police officers fatally injured the man. ASIRT investigations into the shootings are ongoing. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting Friday morning or has a video to contact them at 780-644-1483.
