The county Special Investigation Unit is investigating the case after a Greater Sudbury Police Officer shot a 43-year-old man with an Anti-Riot Enfield (ARWEN) gun on Thursday. Although the man does not appear to have been seriously injured, the SIU’s mandate has been invoked because a police officer released an ARWEN, which has been classified as a firearm, although it launches what are considered to be less lethal ammunition. According to the Law on the Special Investigation Unit, a firearm is defined as a weapon with a barrel from which any shot, bullet or other projectile can be fired and which can cause serious bodily injury or death to a person. On Wednesday, GSP officials responded to an apartment unit on Second Second Avenue in connection with a family dispute. One person of interest – the 43-year-old man – was no longer at home when police arrived. About 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, police learned the man was in an apartment on Grenadier Drive. When they reached the ground floor apartment, the police ordered the man to leave the house, but he refused to do so. At 7:30 p.m., police observed the man through a window holding an ax in his hand. One of the officers deployed his ARWEN to the man twice. The man was arrested and taken to the police station.
Three investigators and a medical examiner have been appointed for the case. SIU urges anyone with information about this research, including videos or photographs, to contact the lead researcher at 1-800-787-8529 or online here.
