The crash occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. Monday in the north lanes of Interstate 81 near 116 miles, Blickley said. The location is about 50 miles west of Allentown. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation tweeted Monday morning that all lanes of the highway were closed near the crash site. Mike Moye was one of those arrested in the crash and videotaped the chaos. He told CNN he was driving on I-81 when snow and fog made it difficult to see the road, so he pulled his Dodge Charger to the side of the highway. “I thought it would be okay. I thought the cars in the back would slow down, but no one slowed down. They just kept piling up,” he told CNN. Moye got out of his car and got off the road and started filming as a series of cars and trucks slipped on the road and hit the back of other vehicles. In the video, a black sedan crashes into a highway sign. a white 18-wheeler hits the rear of two other vehicles. Two other cars enter the rear of the 18-wheel. and a minivan went off the road. A vehicle is then thrown into the wreckage and crashes into the black sedan and Moye’s car as it screams, “Watch out!” On the road, huge amounts of smoke are flooded by a truck that caught fire, the video shows. Moyes was not injured, he told CNN. Videos from another driver, Basia Szydlowski, show the effects of the crash, with cars and trucks splashing on the highway in different directions. A snowstorm warning for the county and many more in Pennsylvania was in effect until 1:30 p.m., the National Weather Service said. A blizzard is an intense period of moderate to heavy snowfall of limited duration accompanied by strong, stormy surface winds and possibly lightning. Snow accumulation can be significant. A strong Arctic front moved across New York and New England on Monday, bringing snowfall that was expected to lead to dangerous travel conditions. No blizzard warning was issued at the scene of the accident at the time of the accident. However, a narrow strip of snow fell in the area and on I-81 based on radar data analyzed by CNN meteorologists. Winds above 20 mph were reported in the area, which could result in low visibility. CNN’s Judson Jones contributed to this report.
