A good Samaritan spotted elderly Shih-Tzu on March 20 while traveling along 32nd Avenue NE near Ninth Road NE, west of the Deerfoot Trail.
They brought the dog to an emergency veterinary clinic, where its staff unwrapped the fur and communicated with human society.
In a news release on Friday, human society described the dog as “soaked in urine and feces” and with claws so wooded that they “curled into the pillows of her feet”.
The dog suffered from pyometra (infected uterus), which according to human society can be fatal if left untreated.
A senior Shih-Tzu was found in Calgary on March 20, 2022 while traveling along 32 NE Avenue near Nine Street.
“In the many years I have been doing this job, I have never seen a mat so severely,” said Calgary Humane Society spokesman Brad Nichols.
“This situation did not develop overnight. It was many months – probably years – of reckless, criminal neglect.”
Nichols says the dog was “incredibly lucky” to be found so he could receive the care he needed to survive.
