Ontario Provincial Police said Perth Route 43 between Perth Road 109 and Perth Road 110 – a stretch of rural road near the small airport – was closed while officers investigated the crash of the twin-engine plane. In an interview, the press representative of the OPP Const. Kim Lyon said local police and firefighters were called to the scene of the crash in an empty field shortly after 9am.

“Right now I can tell you it was a small twin-engine plane. One person was on the plane and he is dead. The plane caught fire and that’s all we know right now. The next of kin have been notified, but we’re still waiting for confirmation” before releasing the name of the deceased, Lyon said. Transport Canada has been contacted to assist in the investigation, police said. No information has been released about the cause of the crash, where the aircraft came from or where it was headed. Although investigators with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada were on the scene for much of the day after the crash, a spokesman did not respond to a request for comment. While the Perth section of Route 43 remained closed until Tuesday afternoon, Lyons said she expected the crash investigation and cleanup of the plane’s debris to be completed by the end of the day. The remains of the pilot were removed earlier in the afternoon. Stratford Airport is located approximately six kilometers north of the city on a 195 hectare site in the Township of Perth East.
