Police have charged the 20-year-old son of a woman found dead in a garbage bag in Toronto’s Leslieville neighborhood earlier this week with second-degree murder.
Police were initially called to the Eastern Avenue and Berkshire Avenue area of Leslieville around 1:30 p.m. on March 28, after a passer-by found human remains in a garbage bag on the south sidewalk.
Investigators said Tuesday that the victim’s death was considered homicide following the results of the autopsy. There were obvious signs of injury and dismemberment, police said.
The woman was later identified as Tien Ly, a 46-year-old manicurist who ran her own business in the Yorkville area of the city.
Police released a distinctive nail design and a description of a dress she was wearing in an attempt to identify her.
On Wednesday, police made a public appeal to locate Ly’s son, Dallas Ly, and searched the woman’s home on Dundas Street and Carlaw Avenue.
On Saturday, police said Dallas was found and taken into custody.
Investigators said Sunday they now claim Dallas was responsible for his mother’s death.
He faces a charge of second-degree murder.
He will appear in court on Sunday morning at the Old Town Hall.
Friends and colleagues who spoke to CP24 last week say Tien loved her son very much, was very hardworking and started her own business just a few months ago.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call a homicide detective.
