The Countess was appointed Colonel of the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (Reme) in a show of support from His Majesty. Appointed by the Queen, who is in charge of the Armed Forces, the Commissar is said to have an exceptional honor following in the footsteps of her father-in-law. The Duke held the honorary title for more than 50 years, and became Colonel General of the House in 1969. The decision was announced the next day after the gathering of the royal family – except for the Duke of Sussex – to celebrate the life of the Duke of Edinburgh. The countess was among those gathered with the queen in memory of Prince Philip in thanksgiving for his life on Tuesday, 11 months after his funeral, which was limited to Covid. Founded in 1942, Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers are responsible for the maintenance of all equipment operated by the Army, from tanks and helicopters to weapons and communications equipment. The royal family said on Twitter that the House combined “the Duke’s continued support for the Forces and a keen interest in engineering”. On Wednesday, the Countess held a hearing with Lt. Gen. Paul Jaques and Colonel Jason Phillips to formally receive the title.
