“The house just went up”

Taylor Bartlett witnessed the house fire Saturday night as she walked out of her house to find flames spitting from a nearby stone house. “My neighbor was pulling a man out of the house who was just trying to run back because his brother was in there,” said Bartlett, who spoke by telephone Sunday morning. A neighbor ran to the burning house to save a man on Saturday night. Another person inside the house was killed, The Telegram reported. (Submitted by Taylor Bartlett)
She said her neighbor entered the house and found a man on the main floor, pulling him to safety. But within five minutes, he said, the entire building was completely submerged, with another man still inside. “The house just went up,” he said. “The vinyl siding just melted on the side of the house. It was really scary.” Police are investigating the fire and remain at the scene Sunday morning. (Submitted by Taylor Bartlett)
Barlett said firefighters had been working to extinguish the blaze for hours and some of her neighbors had been evacuated overnight. She said the man who died lived in the house for about 40 years. The RNC fire department is on the scene Sunday morning. The causes of the fire are still under investigation. Read more from CBC Newfoundland and Labrador
