A tip about an initial stolen vehicle led Strathmore RCMP to a rural property near Langdon on the morning of August 3rd.
There, shortly after 8 a.m., police say they encountered a different stolen vehicle before the driver fled, through a large hay bail and onto a nearby road.
RCMP used multiple detachments and the Calgary Police Service’s HAWCS helicopter to follow the vehicle for about four hours after a failed attempt to stop it with a tire deflator, but eventually pulled it over.
Mounties say the vehicle was later recovered in Airdrie, where CCTV footage revealed the driver had switched to another stolen vehicle.
Meanwhile, back at the farm property near Langdon, RCMP executed a search warrant, finding additional stolen vehicles as well as a suspected stolen trailer, a rifle and a motorcycle.
RCMP say a total of nine vehicles were recovered from the property.
Mounties are still searching for the suspect in the Aug. 3 incident. The driver who eluded arrest is described as a white male, 20-30 years old, wearing a dark sweater and hat at the time. Staff Sergeant Mark Wielgosz, detachment commander for the Strathmore RCMP, says property crime is a growing problem, with offenders often operating in a dangerous manner. “Despite situations like this, our members take great care to minimize risk to the public while working to apprehend those responsible for these types of crimes,” he said in a statement Tuesday. “Thankfully, no one was injured. We continue to rely on the public’s assistance to help identify the individuals involved in these crimes.” Anyone with information about this person or his whereabouts is asked to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, by visiting P3Tipd.com online or using the P3 Tips app.
