Officials say that just before noon, Ketura Wilson, 21, left the police station when she answered a call from a driver who was in danger. Illinois State Police say Oak Forest police officers tried to transport Wilson to the hospital for a mental health assessment.
He ran from the accident to a barber shop and then to the Food 4 Less supermarket where he later died.
Some of Wilson’s last moments were recorded in an exclusive video with a mobile phone taken through the barber shop.
She tried to enter when one of the barbers told her to drop her weapon and turn herself in to police.
He did not do it. Instead he ran.
The video shows her running away from police on the way to the Food 4 Less store near 159th and Central Avenue half a mile away. Police heard from the radio that he had tried to steal someone to get there.
That’s the end of the police chase. After firing on police inside the store, police retaliated.
Wilson and an officer were both shot.
Jackie Human said she and her husband shop at Food 4 Less every Sunday. He said he heard voices, escalated and then heard gunshots.
“I stood there for a minute. I did not know where it was coming from. And when I realized it was not stopping, I ran with the other people,” he said.
Cal Dassan is the barber who tried to get Wilson to surrender.
“You told her to drop your gun on the ground,” he said. “It’s not worth it. He looked at me for a minute. He just kept looking and then just took off. He started running down the street.”
Both the officer and Wilson were taken to hospital and Wilson later died of her injuries. The policeman was in a serious but stable condition.
It is not yet clear if anyone else was involved in the crash or if Wilson used her gun before reaching the supermarket.
The Oak Forest Police Department has asked the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force to investigate the shooting.
