The Swiss beat South Korean EunJung Kim 7-6 for the gold medal. Canada’s Kerri Einarson beat Sweden 8-7 in an extra bronze medal earlier on Sunday. Tirinzoni teamed up with Canada’s Jennifer Jones and Rachel Homan to miss out on the only teams unbeaten in all of their qualifying rounds and playoffs. The Swiss were also the first in the 43-year history of the women’s championship to win three consecutive gold medals. “Winning it once is quite difficult, but winning it three times in a row is crazy,” Tirinzoni said. “All three of them were tough and so special.” Tirinzoni, Alina Paetz, Esther Neuenschwander and Melanie Barbezat won last year in Calgary and in 2019 in Silkeborg, Denmark. The championship was canceled two years ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tirinzoni, coached by Canadian Pierre Charette, set the record for the best round-robin match at last month’s Olympics, but lost the semifinals and the bronze medal race in Beijing. The Swiss returned to their country after Beijing and had to win a national title to play in the world championship. “We had to play eight games to get here, but it also showed us that we really wanted to go,” Tirinzoni said. “We really fought through these nationals. “Coming here, to be honest, I thought the team might be a little mentally tired. It was not like that. Sometimes the lights went out.” Swiss teams have won seven of the last 10 women’s world championships. Paetz, who is throwing fourth stones for Tirinzoni, missed the team that won gold in 2015. “I think we have some good individual players and in the past they have found a way to play together,” said Paetz. “That’s why we always had big teams. We are hard workers in Switzerland and we know how to practice.” This Canadian Press report was first published on March 27, 2022.
