Hawkins died at a hotel in Chapinero, Bogota, Colombia, local health officials said in a press release Saturday morning. They had received reports of “a patient with chest pain”, according to the Spanish-language press release. Attempts to resuscitate Hawkins were tried. “However, there was no response and the patient was pronounced dead,” said the Bogota District Health Department. Teams from EMI, a healthcare company that provides in-home healthcare services, also responded to the emergency, according to local health officials. Hawkins’s body was removed from the scene. Crowds soon gathered outside the hotel, with some holding candlelight vigils to mourn the fallen drummer. “The Department of Regional Health is mourning the death of this talented musician and drummer, widely recognized internationally for his work,” Colombian health officials said in a statement. “After all, the entity sends its message of condolences to its family, colleagues and followers.” Colombia’s attorney general’s office tweeted Saturday morning that “a team of prosecutors and investigators has been instructed to attend the urgent matter and support the investigation.” The Foo Fighters were to perform in Colombia for the first time in three years at the Estéreo Picnic Festival on Friday night in Bogota, following their Latin American tour. Neither the band nor the Colombian authorities have yet revealed the cause of Hawkins’s death.
