Created in the Craigavon area, the Craigavon rookie performed at the Vital Festival almost 10 years ago, and for Gilford-based singer Tom Harte, it’s still the pinnacle of his music career. Hawkins, 50, died at a hotel in Bogota, Colombia, while the band was playing at a music festival over the weekend. In a statement following the initial forensic examination, the Colombian Attorney General’s Office said a preliminary urine toxicology test showed the presence of 10 substances, including marijuana, antidepressants and opioids. Harte said he was shocked by the news and feared it would be difficult for one of the biggest bands in the world to recover. “You have to feel for Dave Grohl,” said Harte, a singer with Trucker Diablo, who took a long break in 2012 when he was selected to support the Foo Fighters when they played at Belfast Ormeau Park. The concert, on August 21, 2012, also featured The Black Keys and a day later the ’90s Manchester Icons, The Stone Roses, made headlines. Grohl was a famous Nirvana drummer before forming the Foo Fighters until the death of Kurt Cobain. “He was the drummer in a band who lost his singer, now the singer in a band who lost his drummer. “He must think he’s cursed,” Harrett said. “Foo Fighters have been at the top of the music industry for so long and we know from being in a band that it’s like a wedding. You are best friends and the Foo Fighters have been such a tight-knit band for so long that it will hit them all very hard. “You wonder if they will have the strength to take it all again and move on.” For Harte and his band, the formation of Trucker Diablo was about four kids from the 1980s having fun and is something he saw in Foo Fighters when it came time to hang out with them behind the scenes of Vital. “They lived the dream that all bands like us want to live. “We were lucky to get a taste of it early in our career as a band and it has inspired us ever since,” added Harte. “Taylor was a normal guy. They all were. Having the time of their lives, living their dream in the sun, playing in front of thousands wherever they went. Their success was something that inspired so many bands in the industry. “With some rock bands, the members come in and the members leave, but when someone who is a key part of the band, who has been with the band for so long, gets lost so suddenly and eventually, it’s like a death in the family. We know from our tour that you spend more time with the band than with your family. And the death of Taylor Hawkins is something that will be difficult to overcome. “We talked about it as a band over the weekend. If something happened to any of us, we do not think we could go on. It just wouldn’t be the same. “ Trucker Diablo are set to embark on their own tour later this year, with dates scheduled across the UK in September and October. They also have a new EP expected to be released and are planning a new album next year. “We’ve been listening to Foo Fighters for years and we couldn’t believe we were given the opportunity to play on the same stage as them,” Harte said. “It was a real start for us as a band. “We were one of the rising actors at the time and we won a competition to be part of the show. I think the style of music suited us better and it is an opportunity for which we have always been grateful and something we will always look back on with pride. “Listening to their music and then being part of their show is still something that is hard for all of us to believe that it really happened.” Hart also recalled: “We brought some presents from Ireland to the band. “Taylor was an absolute star, a drum legend and a master. You have to be special to reach the top and even better to stay there for so long. “ Rescuers tried to resuscitate Hawkins, who was married with three children, on Friday night, but there was no response. He was pronounced dead at his hotel in northern Bogota, where the band was due to give their final concert on a world tour.
