A strong low-pressure system monitoring the South Coast will bring extensive rainfall to British Columbia, with the heaviest rainfall occurring overnight through Monday. There are warnings for rain, wind and winter storms throughout the province. The uphill areas from the Lower Sunshine Coast to the Lower Fraser Valley are expected to receive the heaviest rainfall during the season. Heavy rainfall is expected to decrease in the rains until Monday morning. “Heavy rains can cause sudden floods and water build-up on the roads. “Watch out for possible outflows near rivers, creeks and culverts,” the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said in a rain warning for Vancouver’s West Island. Lower Mainland can expect to see an area of 20-75 mm, depending on where you are in the area. Possible local floods. Winds will accelerate and carry the risk of ship delays and power outages. A secondary front will bring southeast winds of 70 km / h and in some local areas gusts of over 80 km / h could be seen. The winds will blow gradually until Monday afternoon. For mountain passes, rainfall will start as snow near the top, with lower altitudes receiving rain. The heaviest snowfall is expected on Monday, as the system moves further inside. Heavy snowfall will be reduced to thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon. The exact amount of snowfall is uncertain, but the instructions begin to agree on amounts ranging between 15-30 cm, depending on the location and altitude. Travelers should be prepared for adverse weather conditions and significant travel breaks. The threat of new rainfall and strong winds will also increase the risk of avalanches. The degree of danger has risen to moderate or high in many of the BC mountain ranges on Monday, according to Avalanche Canada. There is a chance for a day or two of warmer spring weather later this week for the South Coast, but otherwise temperatures will be close to or on the cooler side of the season as we start in April.
