The Universal Catholic Teachers of Toronto (TECT) announced the deal on Saturday. With the agreement, the union said the work campaign as a rule has been suspended.
“I would like to thank the members for their support and encouragement during this difficult round of negotiations. “This agreement will ensure that our members will continue to have the necessary classroom conditions that will best ensure the best possible learning environment for our students,” TECT President Julie Altomare-Di Nunzio said in a statement.
“I also thank all our parents, students and communities for their patience and understanding.”
The union, which represents 5,000 permanent and occasional elementary school teachers at TCDSB, said the details of the deal remain confidential as members have yet to ratify it.
The teachers have been without a contract since August 31, 2019. Talks between the union and the TCDSB began in February 2021 but were interrupted months later, which led to the launch of the “work to rule” campaign.
In January, the union submitted a formal announcement to the board, informing it of a planned strike in some schools. However, TECT suspended the strike days later, citing a “constructive dialogue” with the school board.
