Jeremy Hunt, chairman of the committee, said the coronavirus crisis was a “big blow” with fewer people starting treatment for cancer, but there were problems even before the pandemic. Explaining the report’s findings, Mr Hunt told Sky News: “But even before the pandemic, the fundamental issue is the cancer workforce. We find that we have about 200 oncologists, 2,000 radiologists, 4,000 cancer nurses. “So while the government is very welcome, it is investing in more diagnostic centers, about 200 of them all over England, unless you have the staff to run these centers, you will have these issues and that is why we are thinking of “The Cancer Workforce, which we would like an independent system to ensure that we actually train enough doctors and nurses for the future, is absolutely necessary.”
