A witness called police at 12:45 p.m. to report the first shooting in the parking lot of the Rockland Mall in the town of Mount Royal. A 44-year-old man was shot and taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police said they do not have a motive for the attack and the suspect fled. Police met with witnesses on Tuesday. Police sources identified the victim as Maxime Lenoir, who had ties to organized crime in Montreal with biker gangs and the Mafia. Lenoir was suspected by police of being involved in major drug-trafficking operations, including methamphetamines and cocaine. A Sûreté du Québec investigation into a meth lab in the eastern cities led to four arrests in 2020. A ruling issued in the court case that followed that investigation described Lenoir as a “person of interest” even though he was never charged. The second shooting occurred about 45 minutes later at the Napoli pizzeria on rue St-Denis in the Quartier Latin district. According to police, a 50-year-old man was shot in the upper body. The victim was inside when the gunman arrived, fired at least one shot and then fled in an unknown direction, police said. Paramedics performed CPR on the victim en route to the hospital, but he later died of his injuries. No arrests have been made in either shooting. Mayor Valérie Plante took to Twitter to tell Montrealers that the Montreal Police Department has put the “necessary resources” into shedding light on the two shootings.
