One person was arrested for two pending warrants while another was arrested for violating the court order by honking too loudly or making other loud noises, police said in a press release. “Our goal again today (Saturday) was to reduce the impact of these demonstrations on residents and visitors in the core of our center. “This has been achieved largely thanks to the collective efforts of our officers and collaborators,” Deputy Chief of Staff Chad Tawfik told a news conference. The order, issued March 18, bans road and sidewalk blockades, commercial sales and the operation of unlicensed vendor kiosks. It also prohibits excessive honking or the use of an amplification system. Despite the order, about 200 protesters filled the Harley Hotchkiss Gardens around 2 p.m. The group grew to about 300 people during the afternoon as protesters who had previously gathered in Prince’s Island Park moved to join them. The majority of the protesters left around 4 in the afternoon “As far as we know, there were no injuries or property damage during the protests,” the statement said. The police and police officers of the city have issued many tickets during demonstrations. Calgary Police issued 19 calls under the Traffic Safety Act, including 14 for horn overuse and additional violations for registration violations and expired equipment. Police say more tickets are expected.

City officials issued a summons to a protester for violating the court order. Twenty-five more tickets were issued, including 23 tickets for excessive honking, one for illegal drone use and one ticket for operating a business without a license.
In the Hotchkiss Gardens, several speakers expressed contempt for travel vaccination requirements, fears that COVID-19 health measures could be reversed, and restrictions restricting protests under the current order.

“We all came here Saturday afternoon knowing that we could be arrested for speaking out against our elected leaders,” said Nathan Ray, who told the crowd he worked with the Canada Post.

Another protester was arrested on a pending warrant.
