Ramsay, camera operator Richie Mockler, producers Martin Vowles and Dominique Van Heerden and local producer Andrii Lytvynenko were ambushed on February 28 on the outskirts of Kiev. Now back in the UK – Stuart, Dominique and Richie teamed up with Sarah-Jane Mee on Sky News Daily to talk for the first time together about what happened and how they managed to escape their lives. “It’s nothing short of a miracle that five people got out of the car,” Ramsay told Sarah-Jane Mee. If someone said, “The five of you will sit in this car and we will shoot you for three minutes and 20 seconds.” What do you think would be your chances of going out? And you will not say anything. “ Like other foreign journalists – they tried to collect photos and first-hand accounts of what was happening from the Russian invasion. But they came under fire from a gang believed to be saboteurs of a Russian gang – and as the bullets hit their car they had to escape from an embankment in a remote warehouse. Mockler was hit twice with his armor taking both bullets. But Ramsay was hit by a shot from under his armor. “People think armor covers everything. In fact, it only covers the front and back of your chest – your vital organs,” he said. “As I was leaving the car, I was shot. You can describe it slightly to the right of my bottom, if you want on the top of my foot and then out… just before the kidneys. “The surgeon said ‘you’re like the luckiest person I’ve ever met’ – and he was a military surgeon. “He said he only had to touch a little bone and I would have died because it was going in a strange direction, probably upwards.” Follow the Daily Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Spreaker Daily Podcast Team: Editor – Paul StanworthEditor – Philly BeaumontFirst Podcast Producer – Annie Joyce Podcast Producers – Rosie Gillott & Soila ApparicioJunior Podcast Producer – Aishah Rahman Interview Producer – Reece Denton Digital Producer – David Chip.
