This is the first accusation of Ukrainian air strikes on Russian territory since the start of the war between the two countries on February 24. Picture: The oil depot is located in Belgorod, which is located near the border with Ukraine A number of videos showing an air raid and the warehouse fire have been widely shared on social media. In the tent This video showing a huge fire appears to have been taken at the oil depot itself. The oil depot is not far from the residential areas of the city and has a number of residential areas around it. Image: The oil depot is located near the main area of Belgorod and has a large number of residential areas that surround it. Photo: Google Maps The edge of the building, power lines, and lights align with a Google Map roadmap to help confirm where the video was taken from. Image: The selection of key landmarks in the video allows us to verify where it was shot. Photo: Google Maps The man being filmed is heard saying: “An explosion. Our neighbors – an oil depot – have exploded. They have zero safety regulations there, those boats. They are burning slowly. “Someone said the explosion was not very strong, but it is.” The moment of the attack A CCTV clip circulating on the internet appears to indicate the time of the attack. The camera is mounted outside a building with a large blue roof, as indicated by the white square. A transmission tower and a white building with a characteristic roof help us to locate the material geographically. Image: The camera recording the attack is located in a building north of the oil depot. Photo: Google Maps The video shows what appears to be two helicopters flying overhead, one after the other. We have enlarged this helicopter to see it more easily. Image: It is possible to see what a helicopter looks like in the video Intense light rods that appear to be artillery fire fall towards the warehouse and shortly after the area is filled with light as if an explosion had occurred. You can watch it right now in this video clip. A woman can be heard in the background saying: “Boy, oh boy! Poor dogs, they all fled. One had explosions and then the other.” Helicopter identification – and who flies them This video has been shot far beyond the repository. In Google Maps you can select a brightly colored building and an unusual design to confirm where the video was taken from. Image: Two separate houses help locate the location where this clip was shot. Photo: Google Maps This video gives us a clearer look at the helicopters, which appear to be flying southwest to the Ukrainian border. Defense analysts and an aircraft researcher confirmed to Sky News that the helicopters appear to be Mi-24. They added that it was not possible to see from the video alone whether they were being fired by Ukrainian or Russian forces. This screenshot from the video allows us to compare the helicopter to a clearer image of a Mi-24. Image: Comparing this image of a Mi-24 helicopter on the right with the aircraft recorded in the video on the left, you can see that they have a similar shape The video gives us another piece of information. Analysts from Janes, a defense intelligence provider, explain: “The helicopters flew too low to avoid radar detection.” Unverified images showing parts of a rocket allegedly found on the ground in Belgorod also offer some possible picture of the helicopter model. We can say that these are S-8 variants due to two factors. the video showing them being fired and the engine parts seen near the spot. Unfortunately we can not accurately identify the type used, as the rear engine is common among the S-8 variants. pic.twitter.com/3g8o9QmLzd – 🇺🇦 Ukraine Weapons Tracker (@UAWeapons) April 1, 2022 Analysts at Janes said the components appear to be 80-mm S-8 unguided missiles fired by 20 B-8 cartridge family launchers. These launchers are typical of Mi-24s. Joseph Dempsey, an aircraft researcher at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, warned that this type of missile is being used by both sides. He said: “As with many munitions – especially unguided missiles – they are mainly of Soviet origin and remain in use with both Russia and Ukraine.” What can we learn from the videos? Our videos show a helicopter attack did happen, but they can not provide solid evidence as to whether the aircraft is operating from Ukraine or not. The version of events in Russia and Ukraine Russia’s governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said two Ukrainian military helicopters struck the depot at around 6 a.m. local time (4 a.m. GMT) on Friday. Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry said two warehouse workers were injured. Ukraine’s top security official, Oleksiy Danilov, told national television: “For some reason they say we did it, but according to our information it does not correspond to reality.” Earlier, Ukrainian Defense Ministry spokesman Oleksandr Motuzyanyk said he would neither confirm nor deny a Ukrainian role.
