Winter is far from over in the mountain passes of BC and up to 40cm of snow is expected to fall in Coquihalla over the next two days. In a winter storm warning issued Sunday morning, Environment Canada predicts that between 25 and 40cm of snow will fall at the Coquihalla Summit from Sunday night until Tuesday afternoon. “Rainfall near the Coquihalla Summit will start as periods of light snow today, with snow levels reaching close to 1000 to 1200 meters this afternoon. “The lower altitudes along the route will rain,” says Environment Canada. “Light snowfall is expected to intensify at night with a decrease in snow levels. “Occasionally heavy snow will continue until Monday and will be reduced to a few disturbances on Tuesday afternoon.” Environment Canada tells motorists to consider postponing unnecessary travel if possible. “The rapid accumulation of snow will make the journey difficult. “Visibility can be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow,” says Environment Canada. “The weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in dangerous driving conditions.” In addition, heavy snowfall will fall on Highway 3, with up to 35cm projected to fall between Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass by Monday afternoon.
