“I am extremely proud of this team,” said American star Christian Pulisic. “It’s a bit of a weird feeling right now because I hate to lose so much, but I’m really proud and I’m looking forward to going to the World Cup.” Entering Wednesday night, the US knew they could win their ticket to a win, draw or defeat by less than six goals. The first three teams of the CONCACAF automatically qualify for the World Cup, while the fourth team will play in an intercontinental playoff against the qualifying tournament of Oceania. The final table shows the US in third place, behind Canada and Mexico, who also advance. Costa Rica finished fourth. This will be the first appearance in the Men’s World Cup for the USA since 2014. The USA did not qualify for the previous Men’s World Cup in 2018, after finishing fifth in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. The 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar and is scheduled for November 21st to December 18th. CNN’s Jill Martin contributed to this report
