A university spokesman said 49 staff members had been laid off since Thursday, and that most of them were non-faculty members. The university will not say how many employees were laid off for various reasons, including privacy, the spokesman said. The Record reported earlier this week that at least one professor had been fired for failing to comply with the university’s vaccine policy. Vaccine policies were no longer required at universities on March 1, but the UW and many other Ontario universities decided to keep vaccine orders in place until the end of winter. Less than 900 students were unable to enroll in this term because they did not comply with the university’s mandate for vaccines. There are approximately 30,000 students taking private lessons on campus this term. The university employs from 4,500 to 5,000 people.
