In a statement, Victoria Police said officers were called to Victoria General Hospital on Thursday night shortly before 9 p.m. PT. BC Emergency Health Service rescuers are said to have initially responded to a call for help in the Vancouver and Johnson streets area shortly after 7 p.m. PT, and transported the child and a parent to the hospital. Police say the previous day, VicPD officers had responded to a parent-child welfare call near Johnson and Quadra streets. The VicPD has notified the Office of Independent Investigation (IIO) that it has launched an investigation to determine what role, if any, police action or inaction may have played in the death, according to the statement. Police say the investigation is at an early stage and ongoing. They ask anyone with information about the incident, who has not yet spoken to investigators, to call the VicPD reporting office at (250) 995-7654 extension 1.
