A Vietnamese carmaker announced plans Tuesday to build a North Carolina electric vehicle plant, promising to create 7,500 jobs and end the state’s near-accident series of car accidents. VinFast will build its first North American plant in Chatham County southwest of Raleigh, with production expected to begin in 2024. It expects to employ 7,500 by 2027 with average wages of $ 51,000, according to the state Department of Commerce. The company is expected to invest $ 4 billion to build the plant on an area of nearly 2,000 acres (800 acres) in about 30 minutes by car southwest of Raleigh. The plant is designed to be able to build 150,000 cars a year. The state has agreed to use job growth grants to repay $ 316 million in 32 years if it achieves its job creation and investment goals. The state also plans to provide up to $ 450 million for site preparation, road improvements and other infrastructure work. The announcement stated that the workforce, motivation and preparation of the space were key factors for its selection. “North Carolina’s strong commitments to building a clean energy economy, combating climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in transportation make it an ideal location for VinFast to develop its premium, smart and environmentally friendly EVs. The union now has funding available to begin organizing the effort, Curry told the Automotive Press Association in Detroit. The union, he said, already has a presence in North Carolina. “We believe we are the preferred union,” Carrie said. “We are the workers in the automotive industry and our goal would be to be able to represent any working car assembly that would take place in the country, especially the EVs that are currently being transformed.” The UAW will also seek to set up battery plants for Ford and General Motors in Kentucky and Tennessee, as well as plants run by Tesla and Rivian electric vehicle startups. Both have plants that were represented by the association under previous owners. Such campaigns, depending on their duration, could cost tens of millions of dollars, he said. Landing at the car factory is considered a major achievement for Cooper, lawmakers and financial employers after a series of frustrations that span decades. In the early 1990s, North Carolina lost to South Carolina for BMW’s first full-service plant outside Germany, and later to Alabama, which unloaded the Mercedes-Benz SUV plant. More recently, the state has not competed for new Tesla and Rivian Automotive plants. USPS ORDERS 3 BILLION. The acquisition of the VinFast plant is the latest in a series of significant financial gains for the state over the past 12 months. Apple announced last April that it was building its first East Coast campus at Research Triangle Park between Raleigh and Durham, creating 3,000 new jobs over the next decade. Toyota announced in December that it would build a $ 1.3 billion battery plant near Greensboro that will employ at least 1,750 people and help meet the automaker’s plans to dramatically increase U.S. electric vehicle sales. It also aims to create more than 2,400 new jobs by 2032. VinFast is part of the Vietnamese group Vinggroup, which provides funds to expand sales of electric vehicles in the US and eventually in Europe. The company already sells vehicles with internal combustion engines and electric propulsion systems in Vietnam. In November, the company unveiled the large electric VU e35 and VF e36 SUVs at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but did not disclose prices. The SUVs would initially be built at a new plant in Vietnam, but VinFast planned to build a plant in the US that would start production in the second half of 2024. Los Angeles-based VinFast plans to sell vehicles through its own chain of stores, with much of the ordering process done online. The company already has plans for 60 stores in California alone. It will also have some service centers and mobile service.
