A forest ecologist says all is not lost when it comes to the ecosystem in central Newfoundland. Fires in the Paradise Lake area are being monitored by fire crews after weeks of forest fuel in the area. However, Andre Arsenault with Natural Resource Canada says that in terms of forest health, the fire hasn’t taken anything away from the ecosystem. He calls it revitalization of the forest, as certain species and trees will benefit from the clearing. He says it’s part of nature’s cycle. He says wildfires can eventually create a problem for the environment. When fires become too frequent, trees such as black spruce may have trouble establishing.
