Smith said in a statement issued Friday afternoon that he “will fully accept the consequences for my conduct. “My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and unforgivable.” Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President David Rubin said Smith’s resignation was accepted. “We will continue to pursue our disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for breaches of the Academy Ethics Standards, prior to our next scheduled board meeting on April 18.”

“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. “I deprived other contenders and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and be honored for their outstanding work,” Smith said in a statement. “I am just happy. I want to focus again on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to return to the incredible work it does to support creativity and art in cinema.
