It happened on Finch West Avenue near Highway 400 around 12:30 p.m.
Police say the truck was heading west on the curb when it had to stop due to traffic in the area. It is said that the woman was trying to maneuver between the stopped vehicles and a construction dam when the traffic started moving again, as a result of which she got involved with the truck.
In a way, the information we have is that the wheels of her wheelchair became entangled with the rear tires of the transport truck and as a result of the events the woman was seriously injured and unfortunately was immediately found at the scene. Insp. Kathleen Sheremetkovsky told CP24 later Tuesday afternoon.
The identity of the victim has not been revealed pending the notification of the nearest relative, although Sheremetkovsky said that “she was known to the people of the area”.
He said the driver of the truck, meanwhile, stopped as soon as he realized what had happened and “fully cooperated” with the police investigation.
“If anyone witnesses what happened, it is a traumatic scene as you can imagine, we will contact the victim services to get the resources and support they may need,” Sheremetkovsky told CP24.
The westbound ramp to Highway 400 and the westbound lanes on Finch West Avenue closed in Norfinch for research, but have since reopened.
