England was drawn in Group B along with the USA, Iran and the winner of the three teams that are still alive in the European playoffs – namely Wales, Scotland and Ukraine. If Wales – who advanced to the play-off final – or Scotland reach the World Cup, they will set up a tempting British Battle in Qatar. Spain and Germany came out together in a separate draw in Group E, while host Qatar face the Netherlands, African Cup of Nations champions Senegal and Ecuador in Group A. Gareth Southgate, who was in the draw, was optimistic about England’s chances, but insisted they would have to be “close to perfect” to lift the trophy later this year. The tournament will probably also represent the last chance for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to win the glory of the World Cup before the end of their careers. Every opponent in the World Cup is difficult. “With England it is an exciting match, Iran is a versatile opponent who did well in the qualifiers and then we will have to wait to see our third opponent. “In general, I am happy with the team and excited to start. This is the third time that England and the USA will face each other in a group stage of the World Cup (also in 1950 and 2010). It will be the first time that England is in the same group with another country in three different World Cup tournaments. England have won eight of their 11 games against the United States (1 draw 2), but all eight wins have been friendlies. The Three Lions have never faced Iran in any major international team. England’s progress in the World Cup final in Qatar 2022
Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions team will be hoping to reach relegation finals in major international competitions later this year – and this time go one step further and lift the trophy. Four years ago, England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, as the recovery of international assets began under Southgate, before reaching the final of Euro 2020. Now in Qatar the goal will remain the same, to finish the big wait from in 1966 for success on the biggest stage. Three matches in the group stage and then three more knockout matches must be held in the finals before the trophy is available on December 18 at the 80,000-seat Lusail Stadium.
